Farmhouse bedrooms are changing. Less shiplap on every wall. More real wood. More soft, warm color. The look feels calm now, not like a theme park.

If your budget is tight, start with our guide to the cottage core farmhouse look on a budget.

Here are 16 ideas. They are grouped by the part of the room they change. Pick one. Try it this weekend.

1. The Wall Behind the Bed

One wall can do most of the work. Pick this wall first. Build the rest of the room around it.

1. One Shiplap Wall Behind the Bed

Skip shiplap on every wall. Use it on just one wall. Put it right behind the bed. Paint it soft white or warm cream. It looks calm, not busy.

Save

2. Wood Panels in a Soft Green

Wood panels give the same feel as shiplap. The lines are cleaner. Paint them a soft sage green. This color is big in 2026. It goes with almost any bedding.

Save

3. Old Wood Boards for Real Texture

Real old boards cost more than panels. But they bring true texture. Paint can’t copy it. Mix board widths. It should look real, not planned.

Save

2. Bedding and Soft Layers

Farmhouse bedding is about feel, not print. Linen and wool do most of the work on their own.

4. Soft Linen Sheets in a Warm Tone

Linen wrinkles. That’s the point here. Skip the iron. Let it look soft and lived-in. Use warm tan or clay tones. Stark white can look too much like a hotel.

5. A Thick Throw at the Foot of the Bed

A thick, knit throw adds texture. It’s soft and it’s easy. Fold it in thirds. Lay it over the end of the bed.

Save

6. One Small Plaid Blanket

Use just one small plaid blanket. Fold it at the foot of the bed. It adds pattern but stays simple. A full plaid duvet can feel more like a cabin.

Save

3. Furniture and Light

7. A Soft Headboard

Add a soft headboard. It balances all the hard wood in the room. Use boucle or linen in warm white. It stays soft, not fancy.

Save

8. Wall Lights Instead of Lamps

Put a small swing-arm light on each side of the bed. This clears your nightstand. It also adds a farmhouse look. Black or bronze both work well.

Save

9. A Wood Nightstand With Real Grain

Skip the painted nightstand here. Use solid wood. Let the grain show. It grounds the room. It gives your eyes a rest from all the soft white.

Save

10. An Old Dresser Left as Is

Not every piece needs paint. If a dresser has good bones and a warm stain, leave it alone. Old wood has a history that new pieces can’t fake.

Save

4. Final Touches

11. A Woven Rug on the Floor

A jute rug adds texture at your feet. It has no bold print. It also hides dust well between cleanings.

Save

12. Dried Grass in a Tall Vase

Dried stems need no water. No care at all. They look good for months. Put them in a tall stoneware vase on the dresser.

13. An Old Ladder in the Corner

Lean an old wood ladder in an empty corner. Hang a blanket on it. It fills the space. You don’t need more furniture.

Save

14. A Black Frame Mirror

Add one mirror with a black metal frame. It adds contrast. It stands out against all the soft wood and linen.

Save

15. A Small Plant Corner

Add plants in 2026. Use two or three, in clay pots, on a wood shelf. This one small corner softens the whole room.

Save

16. A Big Basket for Extra Blankets

Put a big woven basket at the foot of the bed. Fill it with spare blankets. Now storage looks like decor, not clutter.
