How to Style a Bedroom Like an Interior Designer (Without the Budget)

Designers don’t use magic. They use rules. Once you know the rules, you can copy the look in your own room, on your own budget.

Here are the steps designers use most, broken down so anyone can follow them.

Save

Step 1: Pick a Focal Point First

Every good room has one main spot. The eye goes there first. In a bedroom, this is the bed. Style it first.

Don’t try to make five things stand out. Pick one wall. Pick one piece. Pick one color. Let the rest stay quiet.

Save

Step 2: Use the Rule of Three for Color

Designers pick three colors and stop. One main color. One support color. One accent. More colors can look busy fast.

Try this. Use a neutral wall. Add a warm wood tone. Add one accent color in your pillows. Use that accent color two times.

Save

Step 3: Mix Textures, Not Just Colors

One flat color can still look designed. The trick is texture. Mix smooth, rough, soft, and hard in the same room.

Try this. Add a smooth cotton sheet. Add a nubby wool throw. Add a woven basket. Add a shiny metal lamp. Four textures. One room. No clutter.

Save

Step 4: Hang Art and Lights at the Right Height

Most people hang art too high. The center should sit at eye level. That’s about 57 to 60 inches from the floor.

The same goes for hanging lights. A light over a nightstand should hang low. It should feel close, not far near the ceiling.

Save

Step 5: Use Odd Numbers When You Group Objects

Groups of three or five look more natural. Groups of two or four can look stiff. This is an old design trick.

Try it on a dresser top. Use one tall item. Use one medium item. Use one small item. Vary the height. Don’t line them up flat.

Step 6: Leave Empty Space on Purpose

A too-full room can feel cheap. This is true even with nice things in it. Designers leave blank wall space on purpose.

Keep one wall mostly bare. It gives your eyes a place to rest. It also makes the styled areas stand out more.

Save

Step 7: Match Metal Finishes

Mixed metals can look like an accident. Pick one main tone, like brass or black. Repeat it on your hardware and lamps.

One small contrast metal is fine. Three different metals in one small room can look unplanned, not styled.

Save

Step 8: Scale Your Rug to the Room

A too-small rug is the biggest sign of an unplanned room. The front bed legs should sit right on the rug. Don’t let it float near the bed.

When in doubt, size up. A rug that’s a bit too big always looks better than one that’s too small.
