Command hooks are the go-to way to hang things without a drill, especially in a rental. They work well when you match the hook to the weight and prep the wall. They fail when you skip those steps. This guide covers weight limits, the right way to apply and remove them, why they fall off, and what to use when they are not strong enough.

Quick Answers

  • How much can they hold? It depends on the product and the number of strips. Small hooks hold about a pound, medium hooks about 3 pounds, extra-large hooks about 10 pounds, and picture strips from about 3 to 15 pounds. Always follow the weight on your package.
  • What surfaces work? Smooth, clean, dry surfaces, such as painted walls (after the paint has cured at least 7 days), tile, glass, and finished wood (Command).
  • What surfaces do not? Command does not recommend heavily textured walls, wallpaper, or brick.
  • Prep: clean the spot with rubbing alcohol, press the strip firmly for 30 seconds, and wait 1 hour before you hang anything.
  • To remove: pull the strip slowly straight down, never toward you.

Command Hook and Strip Weight Limits

Command sells many sizes, and the limit is printed on the package. The size name (small, medium, large) does not tell you the exact weight, so check the number. These are examples from current listings:

ProductWeight on the listingGood for
Medium hooks (mega pack)3 lbTowels, light bags, wreaths
Large utility hooksCheck the packageCoats and larger items
Extra-large hooks10 lbHeavier coats and bags
Medium picture hanging strips10 lb for the set listedLight to medium frames
Large picture hanging strips15 lb for the set listedLarger, heavier frames
Mini hooks and clipsLight, check the packageString lights, cards, light decor

Other guides give slightly different numbers for the same product lines. One secondary guide lists hooks at 1, 3, 5, and 8 pounds, a jumbo hook at 7.5 pounds, and picture strip sets up to 16 pounds (Hook and Loop). Command’s own weight limits guide says limits vary by product and strip size, and not to hang items heavier than the limit on the package (Command). When in doubt, read the label on the box you bought.

Safe Weight Rules of Thumb

Stay well under the limit. The rating is a maximum, not a target. Use about half to be safe for things you care about.
Weigh the item. Put it on a kitchen scale or bathroom scale. Bags and coats are heavier than they look.
Count the full load. A hook with a wet towel holds more than a dry one.
Use the right number of strips. Use the number the package says. More strips do not always add strength, so only add them if the package says so.
Do not hang anything you cannot afford to drop. Mirrors over a bed, fragile art, and valuables are better on screws and anchors.

Which Surfaces Work (and Which Do Not)

SurfaceWorks?Notes
Smooth painted drywallYesWait until the paint is fully cured, at least 7 days (Command). Some guides suggest longer for thick or humid conditions.
Tile, glass, and mirrorsYesCommand says the hooks stick to many surfaces, including glass, mirror, tile, fiberglass, wood, and painted surfaces. Use bath hooks in the shower.
Finished wood and metalUsuallyKeep the surface clean and smooth.
Textured wallsNot recommendedThe adhesive cannot make full contact. Command does not recommend heavily textured surfaces.
WallpaperNoWallpaper can tear when you remove the strip.
Brick and rough concreteNoToo rough for the adhesive to grip.
Fresh paintWaitPaint that has not cured can peel with the strip.
Greasy or dusty spotsNo, until cleanedClean with rubbing alcohol first.

How to Apply Command Hooks the Right Way

Step 1: Pick the spot. Check that it is smooth, dry, and cured. Measure and mark where the hook goes.
Step 2: Clean the surface. Wipe it with rubbing alcohol. Command says not to use household cleaners or water. Let it dry completely.
Step 3: Check the temperature. Indoor hooks work from about 50 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and outdoor hooks from about -20 to 125 degrees. Do not apply them to a very cold or very hot wall.
Step 4: Prepare the strips. Follow the package. Usually you press the strip onto the hook first, then remove the liner on the wall side.
Step 5: Press firmly for 30 seconds. Press along the whole strip so it sticks fully.
Step 6: Wait. Wait at least 1 hour before you hang anything. If the load is close to the limit, waiting longer, up to 24 hours, gives the adhesive more time to bond.
Step 7: Hang the item. Start with a light load, then add the rest.

How to Remove Command Hooks Without Damage

Removal matters as much as installation. If you pull the wrong way, you can peel paint. Command says:

Hold the hook gently. Do not press it against the wall.
Find the tab at the bottom of the strip.
Pull the tab straight down, slowly. Never pull the strip toward you. Keep your hand against the wall.
Keep stretching up to about 15 inches until the strip releases.
Clean up any leftover bits with a damp cloth if needed.

If a strip is stuck, warm it with a hair dryer for about 30 seconds to soften the adhesive, then try again. If the tab breaks, slide dental floss behind the strip to slice through it. Both are common tips, not Command instructions, so go gently. Removal is easiest on a well-bonded wall with cured paint.

Why Command Hooks Fall Off

CauseWhat to do
Dust, oil, or cleaning residueWipe with rubbing alcohol until the cloth comes away clean, and let it dry.
Textured or rough surfaceChoose a smooth spot, or use screws and anchors.
Paint not curedWait at least 7 days after painting (Command).
Too much weightWeigh the item and stay well under the limit.
Not enough pressure or wait timePress for the full 30 seconds and wait at least an hour.
Humid roomUse bath hooks, which have water-resistant strips, in showers and bathrooms.
Cold or hot wallsApply within the temperature range on the package. Outdoor hooks have a wider range.
Strips reusedUse a fresh strip each time. A used strip loses its grip.
Hook slides off the stripMake sure the hook is snapped fully onto the strip.

Also expect items that swing or get yanked, such as a bag grabbed on the way out the door, to put more force on the strip than their weight suggests. Put heavy, frequently used items on screws.

What to Hang With Command Hooks

Entryway: keys, light coats, and a bag.
Bathroom: towels and a robe, with bath hooks.
Kitchen: oven mitts, towels, and light utensils.
Frames and art: use picture hanging strips sized to the weight.
Holiday decor: wreaths, lights, and garland. For outdoor lights, see our notes on clips in the cold in our garland guide.
Cords: bundlers keep cables tidy and off the floor.

Picture Hanging Strips: How Many You Need

Picture strips come in pairs. One side sticks to the wall, the other to the frame, and the two lock together. Follow the package for how many pairs to use for your frame size and weight. Command’s heavier strips list 15 pounds for the sets sold as large strips, and a medium set lists 10 pounds. A bigger frame needs more pairs spaced evenly along the frame, not bunched in one spot.

FrameStarting point
Small and lightMedium strips, 1 to 2 pairs
Medium frameMedium or large strips, 2 to 3 pairs, evenly spaced
Large and heavyLarge strips, the number on the package, and a second person to hang it
Very heavy or valuableScrews and anchors, not adhesive

These counts are a starting point only, so check the package for your frame’s weight and size.

Outdoor, Bathroom, and Special Use

  • Bathroom: use bath hooks. They have water-resistant strips and stick to tile, glass, and fiberglass.
  • Outdoors: use outdoor hooks. Command lists their range as -20 to 125 degrees and their adhesive as UV and water resistant.
  • String lights and cards: mini hooks and clips work well and come off clean.
  • Curtain rods: Command makes curtain rod hooks, but heavy curtains are better on screws. See our curtain rod guide for anchors and no-drill options.

Command Hooks and Renters

For renters, the big question is whether they will damage the wall. Used correctly, Command says its hooks come off without holes or sticky residue. In practice, damage usually comes from poor bonding or rough removal. Paint can peel if it was not well attached, or if the strip is pulled toward you.

  • Test a hidden spot first, such as inside a closet.
  • Do not put them on fresh paint or wallpaper.
  • Use the removal steps above. Slow and straight down.
  • Keep the package so you remember the weight limit.
  • Check your lease. Some leases cover wall damage, even small spots.

For more ways to decorate without holes, see our guide to decorating a rental without a single hole.

When Command Hooks Are Not Enough

For heavy or valuable items, use screws. A wall anchor is strong enough for most hanging jobs. Plastic expansion anchors hold about 5 to 25 pounds, winged plastic anchors about 35 to 65 pounds, self-drilling anchors about 50 to 75 pounds, and toggle bolts about 140 to 265 pounds, according to Lowe’s anchor guide (Lowe’s). Our curtain rod guide explains how to choose one. Other options are tension rods, over-the-door hooks, and freestanding racks. Command is best for light to medium loads on smooth walls.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the wall prep. Dust and oil are the top reason hooks fail.
Hanging right away. Wait at least an hour.
Ignoring the weight limit. Weigh what you hang.
Using them on textured walls, wallpaper, or brick. Command does not recommend this.
Applying on fresh paint. Wait at least 7 days.
Pulling the strip toward you. Pull the tab slowly straight down.
Reusing old strips. Use a new strip each time.
Using regular hooks in a steamy bathroom. Use bath hooks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can Command hooks hold?

It depends on the product. Examples from current listings: medium hooks about 3 lb, extra-large hooks about 10 lb, medium picture strip sets about 10 lb, and large picture strip sets about 15 lb. Always follow the number on your package.

Do Command hooks damage walls?

Used correctly, Command says its hooks come off without holes or sticky residue. Damage usually comes from poor bonding or pulling the strip the wrong way. Paint can peel if it was not well attached.

Can I use Command hooks on textured walls, wallpaper, or brick?

Command does not recommend them on heavily textured surfaces, wallpaper, or brick. The adhesive needs a smooth surface, and wallpaper can tear.

How long should I wait after painting to use Command hooks?

Command says the paint should be fully cured for at least 7 days. If the paint is thick or the room is humid, waiting longer is safer.

How do I clean the wall before using Command hooks?

Wipe the spot with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Command says not to use household cleaners or water.

How long do I wait before hanging something?

At least 1 hour after pressing the strip. For loads near the limit, waiting longer, up to 24 hours, gives the adhesive more time to bond.

How do I remove a Command hook?

Hold the hook gently, then pull the tab slowly straight down along the wall, never toward you, and keep stretching until the strip releases, up to about 15 inches.

Why do Command hooks keep falling off?

The usual causes are dust or oil on the wall, a textured surface, paint that has not cured, too much weight, not enough pressure or wait time, and humidity.

Can I reuse Command strips?

No. Use a fresh strip each time. A used strip loses its grip. You can often reuse the hook itself.

Do Command hooks work outdoors or in the bathroom?

Use the right type. Outdoor hooks list a range of about -20 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit with UV and water-resistant adhesive. Bath hooks have water-resistant strips and stick to tile, glass, and fiberglass.

Can Command hooks hold a mirror or heavy picture frame?

They can hold frames up to the weight on the package, using the number of strips listed. For heavy mirrors, anything fragile, or anything over a bed, screws and anchors are safer.

What can I use if Command hooks are not strong enough?

Use screws with wall anchors for heavier loads. Winged plastic or self-drilling anchors hold much more than adhesive strips. For rentals, try tension rods or over-the-door hooks.
